Homestead National Monument of America
Junior Ranger – Senior Friendly
Completed: July 4, 2013
The staff at this site was very friendly and strongly encouraged this Senior to complete this Junior Ranger program. Their program is Senior Friendly because the upper age group is listed as being for ages 9 and up, no age limit given. The other age group is for ages 5 – 8. For the older age group they are to complete any 7 pages. A plow symbol is used on pages suggested for the older group.
The activities included in the booklet are; Homestead Bingo, Let’s Light-en the Load, Where the Buffalo Roam, Traveling in the Footsteps of Homesteaders, Crowded Cabin Word Search, Necessity is the Mother of Invention, Farming on the Homestead, Perilous Journey, Homestead Puzzle, Hidden Critters, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Name that Park, and GPS Prairie Walk.
I was able to complete nine activities during a couple of hours at this site. I enjoyed the crossword puzzle, using the displays in the Heritage Center to determine answers. The answers centered on typical words and activities associated with life as a homesteader in the 1800s. The Hidden Critters had you unscramble letters to match an animals found in the tall grass prairie. I was surprised to learn that bobcats and beavers are found here.
Once I completed the booklet it was reviewed by a ranger and the standard badge was awarded. It was a great place to spend the 4th of July, a great part of our American heritage.
