Capulin Volcano National Monument – New Mexico

Capulin Volcano National Monument
Capulin, New Mexico

Junior Ranger – Senior Friendly

Completed: July 19, 2013

Up in the Northeast corner of New Mexico is a beautiful National Park Service site, Capulin Volcano National Monument. It was a beautiful day in mid-July, a great place to enjoy clear skies and comfortable temperatures.

This is considered Senior Friendly because of the two age groups mentioned, ages 6 – 10 and age 11 and up, there is no upper age limit. The upper age group needs to complete at least six activities plus an additional activity to include; Flat Hat Chat, Ranger Program or watch a movie. The booklet could be completed in under two hours.

Eleven activities include; Building A Volcano, You’re the Geologist, Mystery Scramble, Prairie Geography, Flight of Fancy, Passing Time, Capulin’s Custodians, Flat Hat Chat (interview a ranger), Searching the Field, Vegetation Returns, Creatures of Capulin, and Let’s Get Moving.

While I had limited time at the site I was able to complete eight activities and watched the park film to earn this Junior Ranger award. After it was reviewed by the ranger I was given a certificate and a very cute patch.
