Senior Ranger

Completed: March 16, 2013

Wow, an actual Senior Ranger program! And at a favorite park site! Their program is titled “Desert Ranger (For the not-so-Junior Ranger)”. The booklet contains 7 activities, 5 need to be completed to receive the certificate and very well-done patch.

It could be done in a couple of hours, however as this is one of our favorite places to camp I spent a little more time on the booklet and turned it in the next day. Most of the activities are based on information found at the Visitor Center, as well your own personal reflections. One activity involved driving the Ajo Mountain Loop looking for Cristate cactus. We have visited Organ Pipe Cactus NM annually for the past 25 years and have driven this loop many times, enjoying the hiking trails and vistas. Living in the Sonoran Desert we have seen many Saguaro and Barrel cactus Cristate, but had never seen Organ Pipe Cactus with this oddity.

Proving once again – I always learn something new when I complete the Senior or Junior Ranger programs!
